1. Protocol of the General Assembly held in Linz, Austria on 5 September 2013

The protocol of the last General Assembly, published in the SPG Mitteilungen Nr. 43 on pages 6 and 7 is unanimously accepted.

2. Brief Report of the President

The president starts his report with a few remarks about SPS, its structure, its goals and activities as well as its relations to other organisations.
The main event in 2013 was the Annual Meeting held in September in Linz jointly with the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG). The conference was again a great success. Several events supported by the SPS are mentioned, i.e. the "Swiss Young Physics Tournament" (SYPT), the joint symposium with the PGZ, and others. Also the initiative "Lehrerfortbildung" has been launched with success, to bring teachers closer to modern physics.
In 2013 SPS has been able to acquire METAS as a new sponsor for an SPS award, so it became possible to donate a 4th award in the course of the current annual meeting. Various other topics are mentioned by the president, whose full report can be found in the SPG Mitteilungen Nr. 43, p. 5.

3. Projects in 2014/2015

The next annual meeting will be held again in cooperation with the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG) in Vienna on 1-4 September 2015.
Among the projects for next year are again a joint SPS-PGZ Symposium on 11 October 2014, the Swiss Physics Olympiads (SPhO), the SYPT, as well as Teachers seminars. Members are welcome to suggest ideas for other projects. SPS will, as usual, make its yearly request for funding support to SCNAT and SATW.
SPS will also contribute to the "200 Years SCNAT 2015" event and to the "International Year of Light 2015" event organized by UNESCO.

4. 2013 Finances and Auditors Report

The 2013 Annual Financial Report is presented by the treasurer, Dr. Pascal Ruffieux (see SPG Mitteilungen Nr. 43, p. 8). Prof. Dr. Ph. Aebi and Dr. P. Gröning, the auditors of this report, have approved the numbers and their statement can be found on p. 9.
The slight negative balance of CHF 1735.- is mostly due to the expenses related to the Joint Annual Meeting in Austria but is compensated by the exceeding balance of 2012. The financial report is approved unanimously by the General Assembly.

5. Modifications of the Statutes

The statutes of the SPS shall undergo two minor modifications, namely introducing 1) a headquarter for the SPS and 2) removing the duration for the term of the SCNAT delegate (see SPG Mitteilungen Nr. 43, p. 10).
The two changes of the statutes are accepted unanimously by the General Assembly.

6. New Section

The General Assembly approves the creation of a new section, named "Biophysics, Soft Matter and Medical Physics".

7. Elections

The president thanks the resigning member of the committee, Prof. Dr. Martin Pohl (TASK Section).

The following new committee members are elected unanimously by the General Assembly:

  • President: Prof. Minh Quang Tran (EPFL)
  • Vice-President (acting as "Past President"): Dr. Andreas Schopper (CERN)
  • TASK Section Chair: Dr. Hans Peter Beck (Univ. Bern)
  • Biophysics, Soft Matter & Medical Physics Section Chair: Prof. Giovanni Dietler (EPFL)

Prof. Minh Quang Tran takes over also the responsibility as IUPAP delegate from Dr. Tibor Gyalog.

The president wishes to take this opportunity to thank all the Executive Committee Members for their dedicated work, their commitment to our society and their continuous support during the last 2 years.

8. New Honorary Member

Prof. Francis Troyon of EPFL receives the title of Honorary Member of the SPS in recognition of his contribution to the development of Plasma Physics and fusion in Switzerland and worldwide.

9. Miscellaneous

The president wishes to encourage all the members to come forward with ideas and activities for the Society. He also hopes that members will encourage their colleagues to join the SPS as there is still a great potential for increasing the membership.

In the name of the SPS, the President wishes to thank the members of the local Organising Committee in Fribourg for their hard work. A special thanks goes to Prof. Antoine Weis for the excellent organisation of this conference.

The President closes the meeting at 12:15
