IYPT2019: 150 years of the periodic table

Joint symposium of SPS and SCNAT

The United Nations General Assembly and UNESCO proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements, IYPT2019, taking into account its 150th anniversary. The SPS and the Swiss Academy of Sciences (SCNAT) will celebrate this important milestone with a special symposium on Friday, 30 August 2019 in Zürich as the closing event of the joint annual meeting of SPS and ÖPG.

Under the title On the Origin of the Element three overview talks will highlight the role of physics in the IYPT2019. Given by renowned specialists, they will cover the history of the discovery of the 118 elements, Big Bang and stellar nucleosynthesis, and the creation of heavy elements in stellar explosions. Each presentation will allow for enough time to answer questions from the audience.

This symposium is free of charge and open to the public.

Award Ceremony

The award ceremony will take place on 28 August 2019 at 10:50. As every year outstanding scientific works will be honoured with the SPS awards.
The winner of the Charpak-Ritz Award sponsored by the Société Française de Physique (SFP) and the SPS will be honored, too.

ÖPG will award the Boltzmann- and the V.-F. Hess prize, CHIPP and the Swiss Society for Neutron Science will also award their respective winners.

During the conference the winners will each give a talk on the awarded work (details see program).

Best Poster Award

The three best posters at this year's conference will each be recognized with an award. These awards are donated by EPS and SPS and are doted with CHF 200.-.

Only posters, which are presented on both days of the poster session (28.08. and 29.08.) and whose authors are present, will be evaluated.

The three awards will be given to the winners on Friday, 30.08.2019 at 10:20h.
